It’s time to wake up to global warming and restore the planet’s balance.
It’s time to wake up to global warming and restore the planet’s balance.
Ever since our days in Science class, we have been taught that data, statistics, facts and research are the best tools to explore and solve complex issues. Given the ever-increasing discussion around climate change and the effects of carbon emissions into the Earth’s atmosphere, everyone has their own perspective around this sensitive issue.
At EGP Energy Solutions, we believe that climate change is a serious issue and have made it a part of our company mission to help businesses reduce their carbon footprint, whilst increasing their energy efficiency.
Simply put, less carbon in our atmosphere leads to less global warming. Less global warming leads to a more sustainable, healthy, safe and lasting future. We believe that balancing the planet’s carbon budget is a real-life problem and we all need to do our bit.
We were recently enthralled in the Netflix documentary Antarctic Edge: 70° South – a fascinating journey to Earth’s last frontier continent, to research the effects of climate change on the food supply of animal inhabitants, as well as our great oceans.
The documentary is centered around a small team of researchers and scientists from the National Science Foundation’s Long-Term Ecological Research Project who bravely venture to the West Antarctic Peninsula in 2015.Known as “the bottom of the Earth”, the peninsula is described as the fastest Winter-warming place on the globe – bringing about some alarming ocean research and predictions for the future of our beloved planet.
According to Doug Martinson, Physical Oceanographer and part of the research team, “93% of the Earth’s warming has occurred in the oceans and we are getting that in the Antarctic” – a notable statistic from the 2015 documentary. When you dig deeper into this alarming figure, you begin to fathom the sheer impact of this on not only sea-level rises, but ocean currents, ocean minerals, ocean food and sustainability, weather systems and dramatic impacts on ocean life itself. As the documentary demonstrates, everything has a knock-on effect.
Our oceans also play a key role in removing harmful carbon from our atmosphere thanks to an intricate ecosystem of ocean life below the water’s surface. Every day, carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed into the vast oceans, where it is used by Phytoplankton for photosynthesis (accounting for a staggering 50% of all photosynthetic activity on Earth).
Often referred to as the ‘forests of the sea’, Phytoplankton not only produce around half of the Earth’s oxygen, they are also estimated to help remove billions of tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere each year. Once these micro-organisms die, they carry carbon down to the depths of the ocean floor, which in turn acts as the world’s largest reservoir of carbon or ‘carbon sink’. A process essential to balancing the world’s carbon budget. A process essential to our livelihood.
So what can WE do?
Whilst scientists are working towards sustainable solutions, we can start with working together to reduce our carbon emissions and energy usage, meaning less harmful carbon in our atmosphere. It needs to be a collaborative effort as the cause of the issue originated from collaborative action. One scientist from the research team summed it up perfectly by saying,
“Humans have taken the carbon that has been stored in the Earth for tens of millions of years and released into the atmosphere, within about 200 years. That is the impact of humanity.”
It is this kind of statement that drives EGP Energy Solutions forward. Through increasing energy efficiency through our solar panels, LED lighting, inverters, batteries and other product technologies, we are able to help commercial businesses reduce their carbon footprint. As a well known commercial solar company in Perth working with businesses who are engaged in embracing a more sustainable future, we can work together to balance the planet’s carbon budget one step at a time.
There are also additional benefits of increasing energy efficiency, thus leading to savings, thus leading to revenue. It’s a simple formula and one that benefits both the business balance sheet, as well as our planet’s carbon budget.
When you explore the statistics, facts and figures which clearly outlay the environmental challenge we have on our hands, the financial benefits seem trivial compared to the longevity of our planet’s survival for generations to come.
We at EGP Energy Solutions stand proudly by our products, knowing that our work is part of a worldwide initiative to protect life as we know it. We invite your business to join in our global crusade to create a more sustainable future for the environment and we welcome you to explore our services to see how we can reduce your business’ carbon footprint today.
